My dad is tremendously funny and a phenomenal story teller. I wore the same pair of vans tennis shoes to school for 5 years straight, had long un-brushed hair, and wore oversized sweatshirts and jean shorts to school. Because I wasn’t popular and because I was picky, I didn’t go on a single date until I was almost 20 years old. I thought it best to not deal with this all in real time in hopes that my Dad would come to his senses.
I think I always had a high bar when it came to dating because my dad really had it all; he was tall, dark, and handsome, educated, successful, ethical, funny, athletic, and handy. He was a tall, blonde, surfer that ended up moving to San Diego for college and that was the end of that. My aunt, however, told me both Aaron and I were welcome over for Christmas so I jumped at the opportunity.
I had an older brother and sister 12 and 15 years my senior respectively, parents who were happy together, and my aunt and cousins lived one street over.
This little fact has had a great impact on my dating life … In some cases it has played a role in the demise my potential relationships, in other cases it became one of the only reasons me and the other person continued to interact. My dating history has shown that they are all crazy (ALL OF THEM! There is one valid reason I see for really being hard set on a preference … just like when I explained to my white college roommate about the “stocking” I wore on my head and what waves were. If you really think those sterotypes are going to ensure happiness, let me know.
while, on the other hand, one person directly told me “If we get married you will have to give up your letters”. I was a good person before I joined and I am still a good man (although a bit more Ice Cold) afterward. If I could bottle the “B*tch you must be dumb & crazy” look that I gave her … Having to explain why you did it, why your active, and why my car will always be black can be annoying …
Several times I have “earned points” for being an Alpha … You should not date or not date me because of my affiliation. One person demanded that I tell her my frat’s secrets and show her the handshake.
I will say I can’t stand people who are ignorant of the personal importance these organizations hold to us members.
